Card Shuffles

Posted on Tuesday 23 February 2010

Home poker games can sometimes be slowing and disorganized, and usual for one reason: No one really knows how to shuffle and deal the cards, and to keep the action going smoothly around the table.

Though there are many ways to shuffle cards, most professional poker dealers stick to a few basic techniques:

* Overhand shuffle - this is the easiest, most commonly used shuffle. It simply entails clasping the cards in one hand, and with the other hand, picking out sections of cards and lacing them back into the deck. This action if repeated over and over, then the cards are cut and dealt.

* Hindu shuffle - this is a not-so-common technique where the dealer holds the cards with the thumb and middle finger in a position parallel to the table. Then with the right hand, the dealer removes a section of cards from the bottom and the top section falls flat into the right palm. The action is repeated until all the cards are flat in the dealer’s right palm.

* Riffle shuffle - this is the most commonly seen in casinos. The dealer divides the deck in two, then aligns the corners of each section and, using the thumbs, blends the two sections together. This is repeated several times. There is also a variation known as “table riffle” which is the same action except the sections of cards are held flat against the table so that it is very difficult to see any cards as they are shuffled.

* Strip shuffle - in this variation, the dealer holds the deck flat against the online poker table with one hand, then strips off small sections, placing each on top of the other until all cards are stripped into the new pile.
